As a D/ARPA intern in 2002 I was assigned to the mid east problem and so I am intimately familiar with the views of the late (and truly Great) King Hussein of Jordan. According to the word of his Family, he was coerced into fighting the '67 war. Which is why he lost Jerusalem. Who coerced him? Evidence shows that Gamal Abd-Nasir informed him that he could apply internal pressure through groups like the PLA and other budding militias if King Hussein even thought of peace with Israel. So why did King Hussein think of peace with Israel and why did he make the events of '67 public in so... shocking a manner (to those of us who watched the footage--he claims that Nasir went as far as to threaten him with invasion that would be covered up by the Arab League of Nations, all 22)? Well. King Hussein is from an ancient family and their wisdom prevailed. But they sill lost Jerusalem.
Syria, Master Assad should know, was at the time wedded to Russian interests and today has no need for that... gang. The times were different and, at that, the politics were different. Not long removed from the partition, and with the noise being made over the straits and the canal, no one expected Israel to attack Egypt with such ferocity. I watched, with my own two eyes, the negotiations to spare the lives of several Egyptian batallions. The price, Sir Assad, was the Golan heights... otherwise the war would have continued. It would still have been lost by the Arab coalition, but the cost would have been genocidal. One hundred thousand lives were spared that day, sir. If you are in doubt, please read the relevant documents. The Golan is bought and paid for with Egyptian blood.
So, no peace? Well...
Israel is only protected by international statutes and not by physical monitoring. At any point in time, you can order your mercenaries to pour shit and acid in the water coming down from the Golan and poison Israel (one of my ancestors did this to the town of Ilesha when the wouldn't fix him a meal of his liking)... so... then
what?
The Syria issue is quite simple. Either mid east peace is viewed through the prism of Syria-Russia, Lebanon-Iran, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and Israel, a thorough and accountable diplomatic process... or it is viewed as between the Arab constituency plus Iran as witness and Israel. The second option is less complicated, but Arab unity is a dream... every meeting they are abusing their mother's moustache... for no reason. Why is it so fucking hard for the Arabs to, once and for all, show that they are not the backwards mob of bedouin nomads that world believes them to be, al jazeera's sexy graphix notwithstanding? The diplomatic route has failed in the past and there is no reason to think it shall not fail now. So, perhaps Uncle Khaddafi can bring to bear his influence on the Arab Leage plus Iran (excluding ALL other muslim nations)... and have them speak.. to ME with one voice.. then I shall respond with a cacophony of soutions... sanctioned by D/ARPA.
